Traditional MIPS is one way for eligible clinicians to collect and report data to MIPS. This involves participating in activities that enhance clinical practice. Keep in mind that requirements may change yearly due to policy updates. This page explains the requirements for traditional MIPS improvement activities.
What Improvement Activities to Submit
To get full credit, providers generally need to submit one of these combinations:
- 2 high-weighted activities,
- 1 high-weighted and 2 medium-weighted activities, or
- 4 medium-weighted activities.
Each activity needs at least a continuous 90-day performance period, but activities don't have to be performed at the same time.
For group reporting, an activity is accepted when at least half of the clinicians perform the same activity during any continuous 90-day period in the same year.
Scoring of Activities
High-weighted activities get 20 points, and medium-weighted activities get 10 points. Providers can earn up to 40 points in this category.
Special Status
Special status holders get double points for each high- or medium-weighted activity.
APM Participants
Providers that are part of an APM and are participating in traditional MIPS will automatically get half credit for the improvement activities category when submitting data for another category.
Patient-Centered Medical Homes
Participants in a recognized or certified patient-centered medical home or similar specialty practice get the maximum score by attesting during the submission period.
To be eligible, the practice must meet one of these conditions:
- Have national recognition from an accreditation organization; or
- Participate in a Medicaid Medical Home Model or Medical Home Model; or
- Be a recognized specialty practice through a nationally recognized accreditation organization; or
- Have accreditation from other certifying bodies that meet national guidelines.
